The Royal Standard is a traditional pub located in the charming village of Upwey on the outskirts of Weymouth, Dorset. The small, friendly atmosphere is a favourite with locals and new customers alike. It is renowned for serving a selection of real ales and is recognised in the CAMRA Good Pub Guide. With a long and distinguished history in the village, the pub wanted to refresh its lunch and dinner menu and approached EDGE for some help with its design.
Landlord of The Royal Standard, Liam Johnson, explains what was required:
The pub has always been at the heart of the village and I wanted to refresh the menu with something more traditional food that had been absent under previous ownership. I wanted to have a ‘rustic’ style menu not just in terms of the dishes it contained but also in its appearance. The food we serve although traditional is always fresh and great quality and I wanted the menu design to reflect this.
The menu design although simple is easy to read and the use of subtle tones add contrast but makes it easy on the eye. It also features hand drawn food and drink elements that blend in to the back drop adding to the overall impression. Printed on a good quality paper stock the menu has a textured paper look adding to its rustic appearance.
