EDGE Design completes new dive centre website
EDGE design has completed the design and build of a website one of Gozo’s leading dive centre operations Moby Dives in Xlendi.
Apart from a brand new design, EDGE was commissioned to completely overall the structure and functionality of the new website to embrace modern SEO standards and browsing trends. Without wanting to be too technical, here is an outline of what you can expect from the new website.
Responsive Web design is the approach that suggests that design and development should respond to the user’s behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. These days, more and more people are using mobile devices to view online content and the website should accommodate this. The practice consists of a mix of flexible grids and layouts, images and an intelligent use of CSS media queries. As the user switches from their laptop to iPad, the website should automatically switch to accommodate for resolution, image size and scripting abilities. In other words, the website should have the technology to automatically respond to the user’s preferences. This also eliminates the need for a different design and development phase for each new gadget on the market.
Navigation is an integral part of any website, but this doesn’t mean it has to be flashy or complex to win users over. When it comes to finding your way around a website, simplicity is best. Function should take precedence over form since visitors would sooner stick with a site that can be explored than waste time with a rigid novelty page. We designed the website to be clear and engaging by considering the user when constructing clear website navigation by putting ourselves in the user’s shoes.
Geolocation data can be accessed through various different sources. Traditionally on websites, it would be determined by a visitor’s IP address. It would then hook up to a WHOIS service and retrieve the visitor’s physical address from their whois information. Recently though, a more popular and accurate way to access this information has become common; using a device’s built in GPS chip. These are found in most smart phones and tablets and are responsible for the rise in popularity of location aware services that we might use.
This helps the customer in a couple of ways – firstly they are able to offer directions to the various dive sites as the coordinates for them have already been entreated and the website is aware of your location so automatically maps the route for you.
Secondly we will soon be rolling out translated version of the website. If the website detects that the user is in Italy, it will show him the Italian website by default – (Of course every user has the option of switching languages should they want to).
